6 Steps To Measuring Your Room For Painting

1. Measure the length and width of the room in feet. To do this, use a tape measure to measure the distance from one wall to the opposite wall and then from the floor to the ceiling. Write down these measurements.

2. Determine the room's total square footage by multiplying the length by the width. For example, if the room is 12 feet long and 10 feet wide, the total square footage would be 120 square feet.

3. Measure the height of the room. This is important because you'll need to determine how many gallons of paint are required to cover the walls and ceiling. Generally, one gallon of paint will cover around 350 square feet with one coat.

4. Measure the number of doors and windows in the room and the areas they occupy. Subtract these areas from the room's total square footage to get the final area you need to paint.

5. Determine the number of coats of paint that are needed. If you are painting over an existing color, you may only need one coat of paint. However, if you are painting a dark color over a light color, or if you are painting a new construction, you may need to apply two coats of paint.
